Miriam Slan is a pastel artist who paints the landscape. She is captivated by the vibrancy of colour, the immediacy of expression and the sense of depth that the layering of pastels allow her to achieve.
She is inspired by the rural towns and countryside north of Toronto where she spends a great deal of time. She works both en plein air and in her studios in Orillia and Toronto. " I am excited by the seasonal colour variations, the textural varieties of fields, trees and rock, old barnboards, the reflections on lakes and rivers and the changing moods of the sky. Landscapes from travels abroad, still life and animals are also favorite subjects.
"I consider my style impressionistic. The effects of light on objects and the resulting abstract patterns and textures are my focus. Strength of colour, vibrating complementaries and strong value contrasts are all ingredients in my painting process.
