As a life long people watcher, it's only natural that, through my artwork, I would try to capture and define what it is to be human. While the uniqueness of each person is what attracts me, I try to look beyond the human form to observe the nuances of their internal life through gesture, mood and surroundings. Then I hope that viewers make a connection that they understand and can relate those moments to their own lives. Not epic or political events but people going about the business of life.
While primarily a watercolourist, I also like to work in pastel, rice paper, or switch to acrylics depending on what the painting is asking for. The ethereal effects lends itself well to fade offs and melting drips that I favour because it reminds me that our lives are transient and ever changing. For me, rich and vibrant colour and a sense of light touching "just so" is how I convey that moment when inspiration strikes.
My fascination with people also follows through to my still-life paintings of objects that give insights to a life lived. I have recently added pastel to my repertoire, adding them to watercolour or by themselves.
I hope the viewer feels the emotional impact of a simple act, the day to day activities which define our lives and the mementos that in the end explain who we are. I am never at a loss for ideas for what to paint next. Everyday brings its own discoveries or a revisiting of joys and sorrows remembered.
